This piece did take me some time to complete. The first steps to any portrait of a well known person is to look up reference. The BEST reference are interview videos and (in this case) singing videos. Picture from the media like magazines can be misleading because of photoshopping, odd angles, and makeup.
She is a lovely woman and I often listen to her music in the studio working. Here are some features for her face that I felt were important to nail: volumed curly hair, thick eye brows, lovely big eyes, dark clothes, and a uniquely shaped mouth. Her face as so much expression when she sings. And I really love that. I also looked at google images just to see what was her overall color pallet and her "look."
Next came the thumbnails. I decided I wanted her thick pretty hair to take up most of the frame and to have her hands against that dark shape. I love how she sings with her hands. Reminds me of the old French singer Edith Piaf. I went with the final image below.
Once I started, I looked up more reference as I went along. I eventually realized that most of the imagery circling around on the internet were old. Even the interviews were at least 2-3 years old. Lorde was 16 when she started and now she is 19. She is older, has a more mature face, and has changed her hair style. I feel the singer is starting a new period of her life as a young adult and my portrait needed to reflect that. So I scrapped my piece. Big hair wouldn't do it. It wouldn't work. She has changed her look. I scoured the internet for more recent imagery, which were in fewer number. Thank you Getty Images though. I decided on a simple portrait. I wanted the piece to be pretty, but still a little weird and unique. With all the interviews I watched to take screenshots reference, Ella (Lorde) once said that she was weird and all her idols are weird, so just be weird! If she ever sees this piece, I hope she feels I gave her personality justice.
